It all kicked off on Friday night when he was suddenly sick...not an unusual occurrence when you own a Golden Retriever...the scavengers and dustbins of the doggy world and on Saturday morning he seemed fine but after his breakfast he was sick again followed by several episodes of violent eruptions from the other end so we set off to the vet. The diagnosis was that he had been eating rubbish...well there's a surprise and after 3 injections to sort things out we set off for home but as the day went on he just wasn't responding to the meds...us Mums have an instinct about these things don't we...I just knew he was very poorly and was deteriorating rapidly.
By the time we got him to the emergency vet he was very badly dehydrated and was diagnosed with a severe case of gastro-enteritis...I could tell she was very concerned about him and it broke my heart as he gallantly tried to wag his tail every time she spoke to him and I had to fight back the tears when the nurse took him away and the vet said to him...not to worry Tiger...Mum will phone before bedtime and I will come and give you your bedtime hug.
He had a bit of a rough night and it took them into the early hours to get him stabilised...I can't praise the emergency weekend vets and nurses at Vets Now enough...the level of care is second to none...they are such dedicated professionals who love what they do...our canine friends really do get far better treatment than us humans can expect...OK it comes at a cost but if it had been me I would probably have been a goner waiting on NHS 24 to diagnose the problem.
He'll be staying another night and if he continues to improve...will probably get home tomorrow...I'm missing my gorgeous bundle of golden deliciousness so much...it's been the longest 24 hours of my life...no tripping over his sleepy body in the cubbyhole...no sharing my breakfast toast and no morning strolls and no crafty stuff for me today...I'm going to be chilling in the sun...I need to get my heart rate and blood pressure back to normal....big thank yous to all our bloggy buddies and facebook friends for your good wishes and support.

ReplyDeleteOh Kath, I am so sorry, how awful for you both but what wonderful care he is receiving. I cannot bear the thought of him suffering (or you) and I really hope he is 'up and running' really soon - gorgeous boy......Extra big crafty hugs, Anne x
ReplyDeleteSorry this is so late, been out with family all day.
Awh hun, poor Buddy, and poor you. They really do put you through it. Years ago when I was a dog owner, we had a golden labrador who contracted gastroenteritis, she was very poorly, but thankfully she responded well to the meds and we didn't have your kind of trauma. It was still a worrying time though but she came through it fine. Hugs Sxx
ReplyDeleteOh dear - I do sympathise and wish him well. Sending hugs Buddy. We are currently nursing our little schnauzer who had a stroke 2 weeks ago - she'll be 16 next month so it's not surprising. She's a resiliant, uncomplaining little sweetheart and I agree with you - the vets have been marvellous! Big cheer for all the super vets in the UK!!
ReplyDeleteHi Kath,
ReplyDeleteGlad to read that Buddy is doing better. I hope he will be sleeping on your feet in the cubbyhole soon!

ReplyDeleteSo sorry that Buddy has been so poorly but pleased to read that Buddy is on the mend and is being so well looked after - no wonder you had a tear in your eye having to leave him at the Vets... I would have been the same. When you get him home he will be under your feet again and it will be like he has never been away.
Big hugs to you both.

So relieved to read that your gorgeous boy's on the mend. They worry you as much as your children when they're ill. Maybe even more since they can't speak! Vets are fantastic though aren't they? Nothing's too much trouble.

Oh Kath, I've not been online for a few days and am so sorry to hear about poor Buddy. I know how you must be feeling, we had a big scare with one of ours at the turn of the year too, God bless those Vets, we'd be lost without them. I hope your furry boy continues improving and you get him home soon. Try not to worry Kath, I know it's probably pointless saying so, cos I know you will anyway, but it sounds like he's in good hands. Take care of you too.
ReplyDeletehugs to you both
