and the theme for this week is...
SPRINKLES AND SPLATTERS
SPRINKLES AND SPLATTERS
I decided to decorate an Idea-ology Worn Cover to hold colour swatches for all my Distress and Watercolour products...
and because it's got to be practical, I had to keep it flat and non-dimensional with nothing that's going to fall off with lots of use. I started off by brayering on two light coats of White Gesso, allowing some of the surface colour to show through. I then applied patchy brayered layers of Twisted Citron and Tumbled Glass.
I added a hint of Blueprint Sketch by dragging the metal edge of my Tim Holtz Design Ruler through the paint and pressing it down on to the surface.
I applied White Gesso through the Splatters Mini Layering Stencil from Set 3 using a mini round blending tool
and masked off a section of the stencil with Design Tape, applied Candied Apple Distress Paint and repeated with Dusty Concord.
By this time I had realised that stamping on this "doesn't sit flat" surface was going to be tricky but thanks to the Stamp Platform and Idea-ology Plain Collage Paper, the problem was solved. I stamped the images from ALL and Create Border 26 stamp with Black Soot Archival on to the collage paper and fussy cut as close the edge as I could
and fixed to the cover with Distress Collage Medium Matte.
I applied Candied Apple Distress Paint with a mini round blending foam on to the image from Tim Holtz/Stampers Anonymous Label Frames, stamped on to the plain collage paper, fussy cut and fixed in place with Distress Collage Medium Matte.
I die-cut the wording for the label from white card using Tim Holtz/Sizzix Alphanumeric Thin Thinlits and because you get multiple letters in this set, managed to cut 3 lots of each letter in one pass, apart from the "C" as there are only two of those.
I'm sharing a quick and easy way to layer up the letters. Rather than adding little dots of glue to the back of each letter, I applied a thin layer of Distress Collage Medium Matte inside the label, picked up each letter with my sticky pen tool and laid it in place. I then applied a second layer of the Distress Collage Medium Matte and laid down the second layer of letters, nudging them into place with my craft pick and then repeated the process for the third layer. I used the centre of the letter "O" for the word and added the left over O's to the background, again applying a little Distress Collage Medium Matte where I wanted each letter to go.
I stamped the image and sentiment from Tim Holtz/Stampers Anonymous Odds and Ends on to Plain Collage Paper using Black Soot Archival, painted the edge with Twisted Citron Distress Paint, fussy cut and fixed in place with Distress Collage Medium Matte. I had a few bits and pieces of stamped Collage Paper left over so I fixed them here and there on the cover.
I added splatters of White Gesso and Black Soot Distress Paint
All I have to do now is decorate the inside and make a start on those swatches...I have a sneaky feeling it's going to be a marathon labour of love, a "keep me busy for many an hour" work in progress.

This is so lovely, Kath! The citron background is so cool mixed with those vibrant red details. I love the stencils you used and the trick with the ruler is just great. I know how hard is to keep the surface flat without any 3D elements that is why I appreciate your cover even more cause it's just genius! Hugs, Marzena

ReplyDeletewhat a clever idea to paint the cover of the book to use as a blank surface. I sure could use one of these books to store color swatches, because whenever I make them I never know how to store them that has easy access!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome, Kath, and what a great idea to make it to keep your swatches in. Love the bright contrasting colors you chose to work in here, and all the paintbrushes - oh my! that must have taken a bit of time cutting those out - looks great! hugs, Maura
