A VERY HAPPY BURNS NIGHT
Burns Suppers will be taking place all over the globe tonight in memory of our National Bard
Rabbie Burns
and the traditional Burns Supper consists of a meal of Haggis Neeps and Tatties washed down with a few wee drams of the water of life.....but starts off with the ceremonial piping in of the Haggis
followed by the Selkirk Grace and
"The Address To The Haggis"
Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the pudding-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm :
Weel are ye wordy o'a grace
As lang's my arm.
and lots of Burns poems by local worthies before the feasting begins followed by lots of Scottish dancing and believe me.....nobody knows how to party like us Scots and the secret to drinking all those drams of whisky and remaining sober.....it's all in our energetic dances

Dashing White Sergeant
The Gay Gordons
but I am not partying tonight.....just a quiet meal followed by perhaps one wee drama....(oops sorry that was meant to read...one wee dram......more than one and hey it would be a drama.

Thanks for this post, Kath.....very interesting! Wish I could see it in person. Love these kinds of posts every once in awhile - they help to shrink the distance between us all.

ReplyDeleteEnjoy your meal Kath, Im glad it's not just me doing it! Im as english as they come but hubby is from your fair land and since we've met Ive always celebrated it with him on Burn's Night. Ive got the traditional meal but scottish smoked terrine to start and couldn't find anything I could make for pudding that was authentic - without having to steam a cloutie for 3hrs - so he'll just have to have a wee dram instead!! He cant have more than 1 or 2 small ones as he gets very nasty on it!

ReplyDeleteHi Kath, hope you had a nice Burns Night. I am just back from the Guild. Not really a Burns Night meal but we had homemade oatcakes with various kinds of cheese, homemade clootie dumpling and shortbread and tea or coffee. Really nice. I think haggis at night would not have been popular with some of our elderly members!
